Hello!

I’m Marley, an independent scholar and consulting curator of fashion and costume. I launched this site as a virtual portfolio where I can post my thoughts on all manner of bits and bobs, but always with a focus on fashion. Here you’ll find exhibition reviews, blog posts, and links to current published pieces of writing. Whether you are a professional scholar or neophyte enthusiast of fashion studies subjects, I guarantee that you will find content relevant to your interests!

With more than 10 years of experience working with historic and contemporary fashion through museum collections, research, and curating, my curiosity is not bound to any particular period, place, or material. I have curated exhibitions at places like the Rambert ballet company on London’s South Bank, the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park, and the Women’s Museum of California. I have written about everything from 18th century embroidery to turn of the 20th

century women’s active sportswear to the fabulous tv-wardrobe of my hero, J.B. Fletcher, and everything in between. “Fashion” doesn’t always pertain to the golden years of haute couture or the innovative frontier of contemporary design. Yes, those subjects are important and there will always be value in reexamining these titans of the fashion world. However, I can also attest to the fascinating ways that concepts of dress and notions of fashion have permeated the field of pop culture.

While I enjoy large scale -- what I would consider to be “academic” -- writing projects for more traditional publications, this site is my personal compendium of writings, blog posts, and things that I am titillated by. It is impossible for me to watch or read anything without paying special, albeit annoying, attention to fashion or costume so you’ll find lots of articles concerning the fashion of literature, television, and film, both live-action and animated.

This is, in effect, my bastion of fashion, a battlement of scholarship and analysis existing so I can share my eccentricities, proclivities, and adventures in the wide world of dress.
